Jolie skips Oscars for Afghanistan

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie made a surprise visit to Afghanistan this week to meet refugees in the war-torn country.

The 35-year-old, who is a UN Goodwill Ambassador, skipped the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night and instead flew to Kabul on Monday, reports contactmusic.com.

Jolie had last visited the country in 2008.

At the end of her visit this week, the Oscar-winner released a statement calling for help for the millions of refugees who are struggling to survive in Afghanistan.

“The focus needs to be put now on reintegration and that means not just putting up shelter but making sure there is water, job opportunities, a school for the children and medical clinics,” she said.
