Suriya’s “Anjaan” has netted more than ₹30 crore in its opening weekend at the worldwide box office, according to Indiaglitz.

Despite receiving negative reviews, “Anjaan” took a humongous opening owing to pre-release buzz and advance booking. The Independence Day holiday and the weekend helped the film perform well at the box office.

According to reports, the Suriya starrer has minted ₹30 crore in its first weekend itself. If it turns out to be true, then the film has surpassed the opening weekend collections of Ajith’s “Veeram” and Vijay’s “Jilla.”

In Chennai, “Anjaan” has turned out to be biggest opener of 2014 so far. The film has surpassed the opening weekend collections of biggies like Ajith’s “Veeram”, Vijay’s “Jilla”, Rajinikanth’s “Kochadaiiyaan” and Dhanush’s “Velai Illa Pattathari” (“VIP”).

The Suriya starrer reportedly grossed ₹2.35 crore from 573 tracked weekend shows, according to Behindwoods. It has outperformed the collections fetched by “Veeram” and “Jilla”, which amount to ₹1.23 crore and ₹1.32 crore, respectively.

“Anjaan” collections are also much better than “Kochadaiiyaan” (₹1.80 crore) and “VIP” (₹1.67 crore). [Note: the number of tracked shows varies for these films]

The film has ended the first weekend on a fantastic note. Now, it remains to be seen how the action entertainer fares in the weekdays at the ticket window. Its collections might drop owing to negative feedback.

The release of “Anjaan” has affected the performance of other films like “VIP” and “Jigarthanda” as they have lost several shows to the Suriya starrer. It remains to be seen whether these films will be able to bounce back in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the makers of “Anjaan” have trimmed the film by 20 minutes as the Lingusamy directorial received flak for its lengthy runtime. The film’s runming time is now 2 hours and 30 minutes and theatres have begun screening the re-edited version.

“#Anjaan – Final cut from today – 20 minutes trimmed. 9 min 1st half + 11 min 2nd half. Now Running Time 2 hrs 30 minutes!,” entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai tweeted.
