CHENNAI: It was only during his engineering course did Satish Chakravarthy realise that his career would revolve around music. He completed engineering and went to Berkeley College, Boston to study music. “I was always interested in music, because my father Thai Anban, a music director himself, used to take me to recording studios quite often. But he never compelled me to become either a musician or an engineer. He gave me full freedom and that made me switch over from engineering to music,” says Satish, whose debut film Kanimozhi will hit screens on November 26.
Satish is not new to the music industry as his theme music on Kalaignar TV is very popular among households. “Though Kanimozhi is a romantic flick, I got a chance to experiment with different genres in this film. There is a hip-hop song as well as a melodious number in this album,” informs Satish. The songs are already a hit and the music director is eagerly awaiting Kanimozhi’s release. “Amma Creations’ Siva is our family friend. He heard my album Leelai, which is yet to release, and offered me Kanimozhi,” says Satish, who worked as an assistant with AR Rahman. “I have learnt a lot, being Rahman’s assistant for two years. I worked on 14 films in two years. I used to arrange orchestra and vocal production for him. It was a great learning experience. He encourages everyone. When we were working on Jodhaa Akbar, Rahman said ‘You have to go out and work. You can’t be an assistant always’ Since then, I have been working on my own,” adds Satish.
“I love to work with young talents. Recently I saw a short film on television. I immediately called the director and said I would love to compose songs for him. I love to compose music, irrespective of how big or small the screen is,” he says.
