CHENNAI: Some of the leading actresses in Tamil right now are Trisha, Asin, Nayantara and Anushka. Most of these ladies have now extended their reach to Bollywood and other film industries and are picking up only very few projects in Kollywood.
Trisha had made her Bollywood debut with the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Khatta Meetha’ this year. The film could not do well at the box office, but Trisha got noticed by the Bollywood filmmakers.
Asin is also doing quite good in Bollywood following her successful debut with Aamir Khan starrer ‘Ghajini’. The actress is caught in a series of conflict due to her trip to Sri Lanka. Nayantara continues to enjoy immense popularity in Malayalam and Telugu and is busy with some very interesting films in those languages. Another leading heroine of Kollywood is Anushka, who has also cut down her Tamil projects and prefers to work in Telugu films.
In spite of all the new actresses arriving almost every day, filmmakers prefer to work with experienced heroines because these ladies are acquainted with the format of commercial cinema.
Working with new heroines could be very tiresome because they take quite long time to complete the shooting schedules and are not aware about the trends and styles for mainstream films.
Recently, Kollywood director Lingusamy zeroed in on Sameera Reddy as one of the actresses in his multi-starrer film ‘Vettai’ after searching a lot for other Tamil heroines. He also signed a comparatively new actress Amala Paul for playing the other female lead. Lingusamy is known for giving equal importance to the heroines as he gives to the lead heroes. So, it was tough for him to pick up a newcomer.
According to a leading producer, the new girls from Kerala lack glamour and style even if they can act well. But when it comes to commercial films, the producers want a package of both good acting skills and glamour in their heroines.
